Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar has stated that Sri Lanka has held several rounds of discussions with India regarding the establishment of a port in Point Pedro, Jaffna. He added that a technical team recently visited Point Pedro as part of this process.
Responding to allegations from various groups claiming that the government is neglecting these development initiatives, the Minister said such accusations are unfounded.
He further pointed out that the Kankesanthurai (KKS) Port is already operating commercially. Speaking about Palaly Airport, the Minister noted that it is currently running at a loss. However, he emphasized the need to modernize the facility and improve its operational efficiency.
At the same time, he made it clear that Palaly Airport cannot be transformed into another major international airport like Mattala by spending millions more.
Minister Chandrasekar stated that the government has approved these development projects and will proceed with them step by step.
