Anojan Death Sentence Controversy: UK MP Nick Timothy Seeks Investigation into British Doctor

The death sentence imposed on Anojan by a Saudi Arabian court has sparked controversy in the United Kingdom, following social media comments allegedly supporting the punishment.

Dr Rahme Aladwan, a doctor practising in the UK, reportedly made comments on social media that appeared to support the death sentence imposed on Anojan, who was accused of insulting Islam and the Prophet Muhammad.

British Member of Parliament Nick Timothy has written to the General Medical Council (GMC), calling for an investigation into the doctor’s comments and urging the regulator to consider removing her from the medical register.

In a statement posted on social media, Timothy said: “Rahme Aladwan is a doctor in Britain. She wants people who blaspheme against Islam to be killed. People with these beliefs have no place in our country.”

He added that he had written to the GMC following a complaint from a member of the public, requesting that action be taken against the doctor.

The controversy has raised broader questions in the UK about freedom of expression, professional standards for medical practitioners, and the potential consequences of public statements made on social media.

It has also emerged that Dr Aladwan’s registration has been temporarily suspended by the General Medical Council (GMC).

The case is likely to intensify debate over the boundaries between personal beliefs, freedom of speech and the professional responsibilities of doctors in the United Kingdom.
