The Chairman of the Puthukudiyiruppu Pradeshiya Sabha, affiliated with the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK), has been granted bail by the Mullaitivu Magistrate’s Court following a complaint alleging sexual harassment by a woman.
The case is scheduled to be taken up again on November 17, 2026.
According to the complaint, a woman who lives near the chairman’s residence lodged a complaint at the Puthukudiyiruppu Police Station, alleging that he had subjected her to sexual harassment.
Following the complaint, the chairman was summoned for an inquiry and taken by police on October 16, 2026, before being produced before the court.
He was presented before Acting Magistrate T. Gengatharan on allegations under Section 345 of the Sri Lankan Penal Code, relating to alleged sexual harassment through words.
After hearing submissions from the chairman’s lawyer, the acting magistrate ordered his release on bail, subject to two sureties of Rs. 200,000 each. The case was subsequently postponed until November 17.
Police investigations into the incident are continuing.
Dispute Between Neighbours
Meanwhile, some reports concerning the chairman’s arrest and court appearance have been described as inaccurate. It has been stated that he was summoned for an inquiry following the complaint before being produced before the court.
Residents in the area have also claimed that the complainant and the chairman are neighbours and that a dispute involving cattle had arisen between them. Against this background, some residents have expressed suspicion that the complaint may have been motivated by a desire for retaliation.
However, these claims represent views expressed by local residents and have not been independently established.
The allegations and the circumstances surrounding the complaint remain subject to the ongoing legal proceedings. The court process will determine the facts and any legal responsibility.
