Energy Minister Meets Mannar Residents on New Wind Power Project
Amidst continuous protests in Mannar against wind power projects and mineral sand mining, which entered its 34th day today, a team led by Energy Minister Eng. Kumara Jayakody visited Mannar Island (05) to discuss with local communities the proposed construction of new wind power towers in the area.
According to plans, two wind towers each will be set up in Southbar, Thaazhvupaatu, and Thottaveli, generating a total of 20 MW. In addition, six towers in Olaithoduwai and two in Pesalai West will contribute 50 MW.
The first consultation meeting was held this morning at 10 a.m. at the Santhipuram Hall, covering Santhipuram and Southbar villages.
Officials accompanied the Minister, along with MPs Kader Mastan, T. Ravikaran, and Jegatheeswaran. Also present were Mannar District Secretary K. Kanakeswaran, Assistant District Secretary M. Pradeep, Mannar Urban Council Chairman Daniel Vasanthan, Mannar Divisional Secretary K. Kandeeban, departmental representatives, and village-level organization leaders.
