Jaffna Food Festival Highlights Unique Culinary Heritage and Tourism Investment Opportunities
Jaffna’s distinctive cuisine and culinary traditions are being showcased to local and international visitors through the “Visit Jaffna 2026 – Cultural and Food Festival,” which began on Saturday (15 August) at the Muttaveli Grounds in Jaffna.
Organised by the Northern Province Tourism Development Bureau, the three-day festival aims to promote Jaffna’s unique food culture, traditions, arts and heritage while creating greater awareness of the region as a tourism destination.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayagan said Jaffna’s traditional cuisine offers a distinctive taste and represents an important part of the region’s cultural identity. He invited visitors to experience Jaffna’s traditional food while highlighting the potential for tourism-related investment in the Northern Province.
The Governor also noted that Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has been gradually expanding, with visitor arrivals increasing and growing interest among investors in tourism-related businesses.
According to him, investors who previously faced various challenges when considering projects in Jaffna are now seeing a more favourable environment, with several obstacles being gradually removed. He called on more investors to explore opportunities in the Northern Province, particularly in the tourism sector.
The festival also seeks to revive traditional Jaffna dishes that are gradually disappearing from everyday life and introduce them to younger generations. Organisers expect such initiatives to help preserve the region’s culinary heritage while developing food culture as an additional attraction for tourists.
Ahead of the main stage programme, a cultural procession and a vintage vehicle parade began near the Jaffna Public Library. The procession travelled through Hospital Road, Chathirachanthy and Kankesanthurai Road before reaching the Muttaveli Grounds.
The opening programme featured a range of cultural performances reflecting Jaffna’s traditional arts and heritage, attracting a large number of visitors.
Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources E. Chandrasekaran, Members of Parliament K. Ilankumaran and S. Sripavanandarajah, Secretary to the Ministry of Local Government A. Sothinathan, Northern Province Tourism Development Bureau Chairman Dr. J. Vivekanandan, officials and staff of the bureau, and other officials attended the opening event.
The “Visit Jaffna 2026 – Cultural and Food Festival” will continue today (16 August) and tomorrow (17 August) from 10.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m., with cultural and artistic stage performances scheduled during the evenings.
