Around 385 people have reportedly suffered eye-related problems following the use of excessive fireworks and high-intensity Chinese-made decorative lights during a night-time festival at the Murugamoorthy Temple in the Pirampattai area of Pandatharippu, Jaffna.

A large crowd attended the festival, where Chinese-manufactured fireworks and powerful decorative electric lights were used extensively. The intense light exposure is believed to have caused eye-related injuries among those attending the event.

Those affected have been receiving treatment at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, while a number of patients have already been treated and discharged.

Jaffna Teaching Hospital Director Dr. Thangamuthu Sathyamoorthy has urged anyone experiencing eye discomfort or other symptoms following the festival to seek medical attention at the hospital without delay.

Meanwhile, police have arrested the individual who installed the decorative lighting linked to the incident. The Chinese-made electric lights and their control boxes have also been seized by police.

The Vaddukoddai Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
