ITAK Invites TNPF to Join Hands for Tamil Unity – Sumanthiran Responds to Gajendrakumar

Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) Acting Secretary M.A. Sumanthiran has extended an open invitation to the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) to join hands with ITAK in the interest of Tamil unity.

“If you wish to journey with us, you are most welcome. The door to unity remains open,” Sumanthiran said, addressing recent remarks made by TNPF Leader Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam.

Responding to Gajendrakumar’s criticism, Sumanthiran noted that the formation of ITAK on December 18, 1949, stemmed from a key ideological difference with the All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC). He emphasized that the split was due to Gajendrakumar’s grandfather, G.G. Ponnambalam, supporting the controversial Ceylon Citizenship Act at the time — a stance that led to the establishment of ITAK by S.J.V. Chelvanayagam.
