NP Governor Inspects Fire-Damaged Drug Warehouse at Jaffna Teaching Hospital

Jaffna Teaching Hospital suffered a major fire incident early Saturday morning (May 9), causing extensive damage to the hospital’s medicine storage facility.

Following the incident, Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayahan visited the hospital premises to inspect the affected area and assess the situation firsthand.

Hospital Director Dr. T. Sathiyamoorthy accompanied the Governor during the inspection and briefed him on the emergency response measures taken to contain the fire. He explained that medicines which were protected from the flames had already been transferred to safer locations and that alternative arrangements had been made to ensure uninterrupted medicine distribution to patients.

The Director further stated that officials of Sri Lanka’s central health authorities had been immediately informed about the incident. He assured that essential medicines would continue to be supplied without disruption through the hospital’s internal reserves and the Regional Health Services Office, urging the public not to panic.

During the visit, the Governor personally thanked the firefighters of the Jaffna Municipal Council Fire Brigade for their dedicated efforts in controlling the blaze.

“You risked your lives to minimize this disaster. Words cannot fully express our gratitude for your bravery,” the Governor told the firefighters.

The Governor also expressed appreciation to members of the Sri Lanka Army, Air Force, and Police for their immediate support and coordinated response in controlling the fire. He additionally thanked the hospital administration and staff for their commitment during the emergency situation.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sathiyamoorthy informed the Governor that essential medical examinations, including respiratory health checks, would be carried out for firefighters, security personnel, and others directly involved in the firefighting operation.
