Government Moves to Expedite Release of Lands in North and East
A key discussion on the expedited release and return of lands in the Northern and Eastern Provinces that were acquired for security purposes during the war and have now been identified as suitable for release was held yesterday (20) at the Parliament complex under the leadership of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources, who participated in the discussion, raised issues concerning the land rights, livelihoods and future well-being of the people in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
While emphasizing the importance of national security, President Dissanayake provided clear guidance to identify lands that are no longer required for security purposes and return them to their rightful owners as soon as possible.
The meeting also focused on ensuring the livelihoods of people who regain access to their lands. Particular attention was given to implementing programmes that would enable them to increase agricultural productivity through modern farming technologies.
The government will continue to take steps to respect the land rights of the people, protect their livelihoods and create a more prosperous future for communities in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.
