Restrictions on Media Coverage of DDC Meetings Criticized

Valikamam East PS Chairman Thiyagaraja Nirosh has strongly criticized attempts to restrict media coverage of district development committee meetings, calling such actions unacceptable and undemocratic.
He made these remarks in response to comments made by Minister Chandrasekaran regarding media presence at the District Development Committee meeting held on Friday at the Jaffna District Secretariat.
Nirosh emphasized that these development meetings are conducted using public funds, and therefore, the public has a right to be informed about the discussions and decisions made. He stressed that the media plays a crucial role in ensuring transparency by conveying this information to the people.
“The public has the right to know what their elected representatives are discussing and deciding on their behalf. It is the responsibility of the media to deliver this information accurately,” he stated.
He further condemned any attempts to limit media activities, including restrictions on video recording, describing such measures as a form of suppression and a serious violation of democratic principles.
