The 19th commemoration of the Chencholai massacre was held in Vallipunam, Mullaitivu, where relatives and community members gathered to remember the schoolgirls killed in the 2006 airstrike.

The incident, also known as the Chencholai bombing, took place on 14 August 2006 when the Sri Lankan Air Force bombed a facility in Vallipunam, killing 53 Tamil schoolgirls and injuring many others. The girls, aged between 16 and 18, were attending a two-day humanitarian first-aid training course at the time.

The Sri Lankan government claimed the site was an LTTE training camp. However, the UNICEF, the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission, and the human rights group University Teachers for Human Rights (UTHR) stated that the victims were not combatants.

The Tamil Nadu State Assembly in India condemned the bombing as “uncivilized, barbaric, inhumane, and atrocious.” The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) described the attack as having “genocidal intent” and called it “an instance of brazen state terrorism.”

United Nations spokeswoman Orla Clinton confirmed that the victims were A-level students from the Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts. The Directors of Education for both districts, T. Kurukularajah and P. Ariyaratnam, verified the names of the schoolgirls killed in the attack.
