The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama yesterday (22) that 6,000 gold items, believed to have belonged to the LTTE, have been handed over to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
The items were among 10,000 gold articles seized during militery operations in the Northern and Eastern provinces from camps, LTTE’s banks, and buildings. Previously, the court had ordered the National Gem and Jewellery Authority to examine the gold and submit a detailed report to both the court and the CID.
According to CID officials, the 6,000 items transferred to the Central Bank were documented with details of weight and composition. They presented this information in a progress report to the court.
It was earlier revealed in court that the gold had originally been voluntarily handed over by local residents to the LTTE. Investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
