A discussion focusing on the development of education in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province was held today (29) in Jaffna, organized by the non-governmental organization SOND.
During the meeting, subject experts presented their views on the challenges and key issues that need to be addressed to improve education in the Northern Province.
Topics discussed included student attendance, academic challenges faced by students, and strategies to enhance the quality and infrastructure of preschools across the region.
Particular attention was given to developing preschools with proper planning and localized strategies. It was decided to coordinate with local councils to establish a model preschool where specialized training will be provided to teachers.
The discussion also highlighted the issue of rural schools facing closure as students increasingly move to urban schools. To address this, it was decided to hold discussions with relevant authorities to limit the expansion of class numbers in urban schools and strengthen rural schools.
Furthermore, participants agreed to meet with the Governor of the Northern Province in the coming weeks to discuss necessary reforms and actions to enhance the education system in the region.
Among those present at the discussion were SOND Executive Director Mr. Senthur Raja, Emeritus Professor Dr. Pon Balasundaram Pillai, Vice Chancellor of Vavuniya University Prof. Mohanadas, former Provincial Directors of Education Mr. Uthayakumar and Mr. John Quintus, and Mr. Sachithanandam, a member of the Educational Advisory Committee of the Suriya Segharam Foundation.
