A person collapsed and began fighting for his life at the Vadamarachchi East public market in Jaffna, but was reportedly denied emergency ambulance assistance from the nearby Maruthankerny Hospital, according to a witness who raised serious allegations against the hospital.
The incident occurred while the individual was purchasing vegetables at the market. Suddenly, he experienced seizures and collapsed, sustaining a head injury that resulted in heavy bleeding.
A concerned bystander at the scene rushed to the Maruthankerny Hospital to report the emergency and requested an ambulance. Although an ambulance was present at the hospital, the driver allegedly refused to dispatch it, stating that the doctor was asleep and that the ambulance could not be released without the doctor’s approval. The driver later said he would consult the doctor before taking further steps.
Ultimately, a call was made to the emergency number 1990 Suwa Seriya, and an ambulance was dispatched through that service to assist the critically injured person.
This incident has sparked public outrage, with many highlighting the recurring issues faced by residents in accessing timely medical services at the Maruthankerny Hospital. Social activists are now questioning the hospital’s accountability, asking: “What is the purpose of an ambulance if it is not used to save lives during emergencies?”
