Australia Boosts Jaffna Border Security Infrastructure in Key Cooperation with Sri Lanka
In a significant move to strengthen security cooperation between Sri Lanka and Australia, Australia has extended support to enhance border security infrastructure in Jaffna.
As part of this initiative, two high-tech scanners were officially handed over Monday (Jan12) by the Australian Border Force (ABF) to Sri Lanka Customs at the Kankesanthurai (KKT) Port premises. The equipment is aimed at strengthening security at the Jaffna International Airport (JIA) and the Kankesanthurai Port.
One of the scanners will be deployed at the Jaffna International Airport for passenger baggage inspection, while the other will be used at the Kankesanthurai Port to ensure secure cargo handling and port security.
The handover ceremony was attended by Australian High Commissioner Matthew duckworth, Australian Border Force Commander Paul Edwards, and senior officials from Sri Lanka Customs.
These advanced scanners will enable faster and more accurate detection of illegal drug trafficking, gold smuggling, and other prohibited items. The deployment is expected to elevate the security standards of the Northern Province’s international entry points to internationally accepted levels.
This assistance forms part of ongoing cooperation between Australia and Sri Lanka on combating human smuggling and strengthening border security. The initiative further reinforces maritime security collaboration and mutual understanding between the two countries.
