Concerns Raised Over Treatment of Sri Lankan Tourists at Cambodian Airports

Concerns have been raised over the treatment of Sri Lankan tourists at Cambodian international airports, bringing attention to wider issues related to immigration practices and the importance of respectful and non-discriminatory treatment of visitors.

According to recent accounts, Sri Lankan tourists have faced harsh or intimidating questioning upon arrival, despite holding valid travel documents and having legitimate travel histories. Such experiences have reportedly left travellers feeling humiliated and unfairly targeted, rather than welcomed as tourists.

While immigration authorities in many countries are confronted with real challenges such as illegal employment, visa misuse, and scam-related activities, observers note that these concerns should be addressed through consistent and transparent procedures. Singling out tourists based on nationality, appearance, or assumptions risks discrimination and can damage mutual trust.

Cambodia is internationally recognised for its rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality, with tourism playing a crucial role in its economy. Allegations of mistreatment at ports of entry, even if limited, have the potential to negatively affect the country’s image and discourage future travel.

The issue has sparked broader discussion on the need to balance border security with human dignity. Many believe that enhanced training, clear operational guidelines, and accountability within immigration services are essential to ensure that Sri Lankan tourists, and all visitors, are treated with courtesy, fairness, and respect upon arrival.
Cambodia does not have a Sri Lankan embassy or consulate, with the Sri Lankan Embassy in Thailand currently overseeing diplomatic matters related to Cambodia. This absence of direct diplomatic representation is seen as a key issue contributing to the challenges faced by Sri Lankan travellers.

Debasa is urging the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka to initiate formal dialogue with the Cambodian Government to address these concerns and to ensure that Sri Lankan citizens visiting Cambodia are treated with dignity, feel safe and comfortable, and are not subjected to humiliation by immigration officials.
