Controversial Buddhist Centre Construction in Kandarodai Draws Local Opposition
Valikamam South Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman, Thiyagarajah Pragas, has called for the immediate suspension of an illegal construction of Buddhist Centre in Kandarodai, Jaffna.
Speaking to the media on Fridayy (16) after inspecting the site, where a Buddhist Cultural Centre is reportedly being built without the approval of the local council, Prakash said the construction is taking place near a military camp.
“We inspected the site today based on complaints we received regarding a building being illegally constructed under the name of a Buddhist Cultural Centre near the army camp in Kandarodai. The notice issued to stop construction has been removed. We have also learned that the building is being constructed by a Buddhist monk, and there are plans to set up Buddhist statues or even a vihara in the future. Therefore, we have demanded that the construction be stopped immediately. Further actions will be discussed with council members and taken accordingly,” he said.
Several members of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) representing the Pradeshiya Sabha also accompanied the Chairman during the inspection.
