Discussion Held on Land Issues Related to Thaidy Tissa Viharaya in Jaffna

A discussion was held today (31 December 2025) at 10.00 a.m. at the Jaffna District Secretariat between the landowners of the area where the Thaidy Tissa Viharaya is located and the Jaffna District Secretary, Mr. Maruthalingam Pradeepan.

Addressing the meeting, the District Secretary stated that the objective of the discussion was to engage in a healthy and constructive dialogue to address the long-standing unresolved issues related to the Thaidy land matter. He further discussed in detail with the participants the possible next steps and actions to be taken.

During the meeting, the participants unanimously agreed to demarcate the limited extent of land on which the Tissa Viharaya is situated and, as a first phase, to release the remaining lands excluding that area.

The District Secretary noted that lands could be released in a phased manner with the mutual consent of the Chief Incumbent of the Viharaya. Accordingly, he reviewed with the landowners the feasibility, boundaries, and possibilities of releasing the lands.

The discussion was held in a constructive manner, and the landowners unanimously agreed to support the District Secretary in taking continuous follow-up actions to facilitate the phased release of the lands.

The meeting was also attended by the Additional District Secretary (Lands), the Divisional Secretary of Tellippalai, and other government officials.
