Farmers in Muthunagar, located within the Trincomalee Divisional Secretariat Division of Trincomalee, are protesting the alleged acquisition of their agricultural land for a solar power project.

They claim the land, which has been cultivated for over 50 years, was taken over by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and handed over to two private companies for solar energy production without proper consultation or compensation.

The farmers say they have long depended on this land for paddy cultivation and other crops, and its loss threatens their livelihoods.

On July 29, during a District Coordinating Committee meeting, a group of farmers staged a peaceful protest in front of the District Secretariat. They allege that police assaulted them during the demonstration, further intensifying their frustration.

The farmers are now calling on authorities to release the land and restore their access, insisting that the acquisition was unjust and carried out without due process. As of now, no official response has been issued by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority or other government bodies regarding the matter.
