From Jaffna Roots to the Global Big Screen: Two Young Talents Begin Their Cinema Journey

A new chapter is being written today for two young talents with strong Sri Lankan roots, as they step onto the international big screen in two different roles, one as a director and the other as an actor.
For Tamil audiences, the names are familiar.
Jaison Sanjay, the son of Tamil cinema superstar Thalapathy Vijay and Sangeetha, whose family has roots in Jaffna, Sri Lanka, makes his directorial debut with Sigma. The film is produced by Lyca Productions founder Subaskaran.
At the same time, another young talent with Jaffna roots, Reegan, son of entrepreneur Kandiah Baskaran, makes his mark as the lead actor in Porattam, directed by Raj Sivaraj and produced by Kandiah Baskaran, co-founder of LIBARA Telecom.
What makes this day particularly meaningful for Sri Lankans is the shared connection between these two emerging talents and Jaffna.
From the northern landscapes of Sri Lanka to cinema screens around the world, their journeys demonstrate how the next generation can carry their roots with them while stepping into new arenas.
One has chosen the path behind the camera, taking responsibility for bringing a story to life as a director.
The other has chosen the path in front of the camera, taking on the challenge of portraying a leading character.
Their journeys are only beginning, but today’s milestone carries a message of its own:
Your roots do not have to limit your dreams. They can become part of the story you carry to the world.
For a new generation watching from Sri Lankaespecially from Jaffna, seeing young people with Sri Lankan heritage take their first steps onto the global cinema stage can be a powerful source of inspiration.
Two young talents. Two different paths. One unforgettable beginning.
From Jaffna to the big screen — their journey begins today. 🇱🇰🎬
