Daily Wage of Rs. 1,700 for Estate Workers to Be Implemented This Year

Upcountry Community’s Welfare, Health, and Education Prioritized in Upcoming Budget

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has stated that firm action will be taken to eradicate bribery and corruption starting from the top levels of the country.

He made this remark while attending the ceremony held today (12) in Bandarawela to distribute land ownership deeds to members of the upcountry community.

The President further emphasized that the government will not step back from its ongoing efforts to eliminate drug trafficking and underworld criminal groups.

He pointed out that despite living in the country for over 200 years, a segment of the upcountry community still does not possess even a small plot of land. The government, he said, is duty-bound to resolve their issues and ensure they can live with dignity and happiness.

Addressing the long-standing demand of estate workers for a daily wage of Rs. 1,700, the President announced that measures will be taken to implement this wage increase within this year.

Highlighting that the upcountry community faces severe challenges such as poverty, malnutrition, and poor health conditions, President Dissanayake said that special attention will be given to improving healthcare services in these areas.

He also revealed that the upcoming national budget will prioritize a new project aimed at providing clean drinking water across the country.

“There is a strong link between poverty and education. Therefore, we will ensure a better education system to lift people out of poverty,” he added.

Recognizing that the dignity of the upcountry community remains at a low level, the President pledged to honor their culture and take every step necessary to promote their social and economic development.
