Ground-Penetrating Radar to Scan Chemmani Mass Grave Site
Plans are underway to conduct extensive ground-penetrating radar (GPR) scans at the Chemmani mass grave site in Ariyalai. The advanced scanning equipment, imported from abroad, will help identify additional burial sites based on satellite imagery and expert assessments, particularly by forensic archaeologist Prof. Somadeva.
This marks the first time GPR technology is being used in Sri Lanka for such investigations, although MRI scanners have been used previously in areas like Mullaitivu and Kokkuthoduvai. Unlike traditional tools, GPR can penetrate concrete and detect underground objects and human remains, as has been done in countries like Canada.
International and local pressure has been mounting to expand excavations beyond the currently designated areas. With approval from the Ministry of Defence, these broader scans are expected to commence soon, potentially uncovering more skeletal remains.
