Health Upgrade for Northern Islands Under World Bank Project
Under the Primary Healthcare System Enhancing Project, an ambulance boat will be provided to Analaitivu next year and another to Nainativu in 2027. This update was conveyed to Northern Province Governor Hon. N. Vethanayagan.
Representatives of the World Bank, officials from the Ministry of Health’s Primary Healthcare System Enhancing Project, and the Jaffna District Director of Health Services met with the Governor on Thursday afternoon (October 9, 2025) at the Governor’s Secretariat for discussions.
The project, funded by the World Bank, is being implemented across all nine provinces of Sri Lanka from 2024 to 2028. Under this initiative, the Northern Province has been allocated Rs. 500 million for 2026, and Rs. 750 million each for 2027 and 2028.
These funds will be used to upgrade primary healthcare medical centers in the Northern Province. The project aims to modernize existing facilities to meet current needs, taking into account the gaps between initial infrastructure plans and present-day healthcare demands.
World Bank representatives and project officials requested the cooperation of the Northern Provincial Council to ensure the effective implementation of the project. They also noted that the Northern Province was the first region they visited in connection with this initiative.
Governor Vethanayagan assured that the provincial administration would extend its full support for the successful implementation of the project.
