Heavy Rain Expected in Northern and Eastern Provinces

The low-pressure area that was expected to form in the Bay of Bengal tomorrow has developed earlier today, according to Senior Professor N. Pradeeparaja of the Department of Geography, University of Jaffna.

In a statement issued today, Professor Pradeeparaja noted that the system is likely to move west-northwest by tomorrow night or the following day, strengthening into a deep depression and making landfall near Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

As the system moves closer to the eastern and northern coastal regions of Sri Lanka, heavy rainfall is expected in several areas of the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

Rainfall is likely to intensify from today and continue until the 24th of this month, the professor added.
