Historic Milestone at Mannar District General Hospital as Organ Donation Gives Two Patients a New Life

A significant milestone has been achieved in the medical history of Mannar District General Hospital, with two kidneys successfully donated from a brain-dead patient and transplanted into two patients suffering from kidney failure.
The landmark procedure is reportedly the first kidney donation and transplantation carried out in the history of Mannar District General Hospital, marking an important development in the hospital’s medical services.
A 41-year-old family man, who had been receiving intensive treatment at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), was certified as brain-dead by the medical team after efforts to save his life proved unsuccessful.
Amid the profound grief of losing their loved one, the man’s family made a compassionate and courageous decision to donate both of his kidneys. Their decision ultimately gave two patients suffering from kidney failure an opportunity for a new lease on life.
Following the family’s consent, several specialist medical teams worked in close coordination to retrieve the organs and carry out the transplant procedures. The kidneys were successfully transplanted into two patients who had been suffering from renal failure.
The historic procedure was made possible through the rapid coordination and collective efforts of specialist doctors and healthcare staff from several leading hospitals in Sri Lanka.
The operation was carried out under the leadership and coordination of Dr. M.H.M. Asath, Director of Mannar District General Hospital. The Mannar Intensive Care Unit team was led by Dr. Kalpani Kannangara, Consultant Anaesthetist, while Dr. S. Tharshan, Consultant Surgeon at Mannar, also played a key role in the procedure.
A specialist vascular surgical team from Jaffna Teaching Hospital, led by Dr. Andrew Nishanthan, together with a specialist medical team from National Hospital Kandy, the Operating Theatre team and Blood Bank team of Mannar District General Hospital, contributed to the successful completion of the complex procedure.
The achievement is being regarded as an important milestone in the development of advanced medical services in the Mannar region and demonstrates the ability of medical teams from different institutions to work together effectively in critical and time-sensitive situations.
The successful organ donation and transplantation has also created renewed hope for the development of specialist medical services in the Northern Province, while highlighting the importance of organ donation in saving lives.
Amid their own immense personal loss, the donor’s family chose to make an extraordinary humanitarian decision by donating their loved one’s organs. Their generosity has enabled two patients suffering from kidney failure to receive a new opportunity for life.
Members of the public and the medical community have expressed their deepest gratitude and respect to the donor’s family for this remarkable act of humanity, which has transformed a moment of profound tragedy into an opportunity to save the lives of others.
