Principal Raises Concern Over Liquor Outlet Located Between Three Schools in Punkudutivu

The Principal of Punkudutivu Maha Vidyalayam, Vinothan, has expressed concern over the impact of a liquor outlet located between three schools in the Punkudutivu area, warning that it could negatively affect students’ education and learning environment.
The principal made the remarks while participating in a Children’s Day awareness procession held yesterday with the participation of students from schools in Punkudutivu.
Speaking at the event, Vinothan said the number of students attending schools in the Punkudutivu area has been declining significantly in recent years.
Although several factors contribute to the decline, he identified the presence of a liquor outlet situated between three schools as one of the major concerns affecting the educational environment.
He said some students who come to school from families affected by alcohol addiction face various difficulties at home, while some students fail to attend school regularly.
“The environment necessary for a child’s education should begin at home. Unfortunately, such an environment is not being created in many households,” he said.
The principal further noted that the increasing prevalence of substance abuse is also having an impact on the island communities of the Jaffna region, including Punkudutivu.
He called on the relevant authorities and stakeholders to pay greater attention to the educational development and wellbeing of students in Punkudutivu and to take appropriate measures to safeguard a suitable learning environment for children.
