Illegal Sand Mining Sparks Attack on Local Fishermen in Vadamarachchi Jaffna
Several fishermen’s huts in Vadamarachchi, Jaffna, were set on fire and the fishermen attacked by individuals allegedly involved in illegal sand mining. Two injured fishermen were admitted to the Point Pedro Base Hospital for treatment.
The incident occurred near the Karkovalam market, where large pits have been created due to ongoing illegal sand excavation. Recently, one person had died after falling into one of these pits, raising serious safety concerns. Residents have also warned that the illegal excavation could cause flooding in the Karkovalam Punitha Nagar area.
Local residents had appealed to those engaged in sand mining to halt their activities, following which the fishermen’s huts were vandalized and burned on Thursday night.
Point Pedro Divisional Secretary N. Thirilinkanathan visited the site and informed the police. Officers launched investigations and arrested the main suspect, while reviewing CCTV footage to identify others involved in the attack.
