ITAK Forms Alliance with C.V. Vigneswaran’s Tamil People’s Alliance
In a surprising political development, the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) has entered into an alliance with the Tamil People’s Alliance (TPA), led by former Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran, who had previously broken away from ITAK to form his own party.
The agreement was signed today (June 11) at Vigneswaran’s residence in Colombo. The alliance was formed specifically to establish control of the Nallur Pradeshiya Sabha (local council).
The memorandum of understanding was signed by ITAK’s Acting General Secretary M.A. Sumanthiran and TPA’s General Secretary K.V. Vigneswaran.
According to the agreement, the chairmanship of the Nallur Pradeshiya Sabha will be held by the Tamil People’s Alliance for the first two years, and by the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) for the following two years.
This new political partnership has raised eyebrows, especially given the history of sharp criticism that ITAK had previously directed at Vigneswaran. Their decision to come together now for the sake of local governance in Nallur has generated significant political buzz across the Tamil political landscape.
