Jaffna Airport to Be developed to Boost Tourism in Jaffna District – President Anura

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced that work to develop the Jaffna International Airport will be undertaken in the near future as part of efforts to develop the tourism sector in the Jaffna District.

The President made this statement yesterday (16) while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the national housing programme “A Place for You – A Beautiful Life: National Housing Project 2026”, held in Meesalai, Chavakachcheri. The programme aims to construct houses for 31,218 families across the country, including 2,500 houses for families displaced by the war.

Addressing the gathering, President Dissanayake said that, for the first time, a government trusted by the people of Jaffna has been formed in the country. He assured that this trust would not be betrayed under any circumstances. He called upon all citizens to unite and work together to build a conflict-free and united nation where future generations can live in harmony.

The President further noted that a large number of houses were damaged during the war and that, despite many years having passed, these houses have not yet been fully reconstructed. He pointed out that many residents of the Jaffna District were displaced during the war and continued to experience displacement even after the conflict ended.

“It is not fair that people continue to live for long periods without a home or land of their own,” the President stated, adding that resolving the housing issues of all those displaced by the war within the tenure of his government remains a key priority.

The proposed develop of the Jaffna International Airport is expected to enhance regional connectivity and significantly contribute to the promotion of tourism in the Northern Province, alongside ongoing efforts towards resettlement and national development.
