Security forces have released around 30 acres of land in the Kilinochchi district, which had been under their control since 2009.

As part of the ongoing process of returning both private and state-owned land, 7 acres located in the Poonakari Divisional Secretariat Division, within the Ponnaweli Grama Niladhari Division, were officially released on September 7, 2025, and handed over to the Divisional Secretary. The land has been temporarily placed under the care of the Palmyrah Development Cooperative Society.

In a similar move, 20 acres of land in Muthkomban, within the Nallur Grama Niladhari Division, were also released by the military.

Additionally, land belonging to eight private owners in the Iyakkachchi area, under the Pachchilaipalli Divisional Secretariat Division, was handed back, according to Kilinochchi District Secretary Subramaniam Muralitharan.

The release of these lands has taken place at a time when the Geneva Human Rights Council sessions have commenced.
