Man Arrested by KKS Police for Not Carrying NIC, Later Released After Fingerprinting

A family man from the Kankesanthurai (K.K.S) area was reportedly arrested by police officers for not carrying his National Identity Card (NIC) while standing on the roadside. He was later released after his fingerprints were taken.
According to reports, the incident occurred when the individual was walking to a nearby shop, located KKS 50 meters from his residence, early in the morning. Police officers, who were in a three-wheeler, stopped him and requested his NIC. The man explained that he had not brought his wallet as he was only going to a nearby shop and offered to bring the NIC from his house.
However, police officers allegedly forced him into the three-wheeler despite his explanation. During the incident, the man reportedly attempted to contact a nearby police officer known to him to verify his identity, but officers seized his mobile phone and did not allow him to make any calls, including informing his family.
He was then taken to the Kankesanthurai Police Station, where he was questioned. Authorities reportedly obtained his signature on documents written in Sinhala, recorded identifying marks on his body, and took fingerprints from both hands.
Meanwhile, neighbors informed the man’s wife about the arrest. She sent the NIC to the police station through a neighbor and later went to the station herself after ensuring her children were taken care of.
Upon receiving the NIC, police provided the man with food and subsequently released him. Officers then transported him back and dropped him near the location where he was initially detained.
The man has expressed concern that the fingerprints collected during the incident could potentially be used to implicate him in future cases, and he remains fearful following the experience.
