Man Assaulted by Alleged Police Intelligence Officers in Palai

A man from Vannankeni in Palai has been admitted to the Palai District Hospital with serious injuries after reportedly being abducted and assaulted by four individuals claiming to be police intelligence officers.

The attackers, who were wearing jackets labeled “Police,” allegedly forced the man onto a motorcycle and took him for questioning before assaulting him and leaving him injured on the roadside. The incident occurred on July 12.

The victim has been identified as Sritharan Kanthan, a family man, who told hospital staff and authorities that the assailants claimed to be conducting an investigation related to a social media post made by one of his friends. The post was allegedly linked to the LTTE, prompting a police inquiry.

According to the victim, police intelligence personnel had initially summoned him, seeking information about his missing friend. When he refused to cooperate, the four men allegedly forcibly took him away on a motorcycle, beat him, and abandoned him midway.

Police in Palai have since launched an investigation and are currently questioning the victim at the hospital to gather further information regarding the assault and the identity of the attackers.
