Minister Blocked at Thileepan Memorial Sparks Tensions

Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar was blocked by members of the Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) while attending the remembrance event of Thiyaga Theepam Thileepan, sparking tensions among the people of Jaffna and the Tamil community.

The incident took place at Thileepan’s memorial site in Nallur where commemorative events were being held. As the Minister and members of the National People’s Power (NPP) arrived to take part, they were stopped by TNPF supporters.

The situation created a tense atmosphere at the venue. Many people have since criticized and condemned the actions of the TNPF members, stating that remembrance events should be open to everyone.

Critics also stressed that no single political party can claim ownership over commemorating Thiyaga Theepam Thileepan, whose remembrance belongs to the wider Tamil community.

  1. The present TNPF leader’s late grandfather is one of the causes for the plight of the Tamil community. While an accomplished intellectual legal luminary, his devisive ideology in politics, his trait of not uniting for the common cause with then FP sowed the seeds of disunity upon which the majority capitalized and continued their agenda.

    What right has TNPF to claim proprietry over this tiger memebers rememberance? It’s time to bury the past and look to the future. It is noteworthy that the people of Jaffna had resented the conduct of hooligans supposed to be members of TNPF.
