The continuous satyagraha protest by farmers in Muthunagar, Trincomalee, against the alleged seizure of their agricultural lands has reached its 31st day today. The protest is taking place in front of the District Secretariat.

Protesters say that only two days remain for the second deadline promised by Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. They allege that the Sri Lanka Ports Authority has claimed ownership of their lands and is attempting to evict 352 farming families to hand over the land to private companies for solar power generation projects.

Farmers further complain that two irrigation tanks in the area have been closed off to facilitate the solar project, severely affecting their livelihoods. They have warned that the protest will continue if a favorable solution is not provided within the given time frame.

The People’s Struggle Front and the All-Island Farmers’ Federation have also extended their support to the protesters.
