Over Rs. 11 Million Spent on President’s Jaffna Event After Thai Pongal

A total of Rs. 11,079,075.50 (over Rs. 11 million) has reportedly been spent on a single event attended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Jaffna following the Thai Pongal festival.

The programme took place at the Kokkuvil Technical College grounds under the theme “One Country, One Nation,” marking the launch of a national anti-drug campaign. The event was organized by the Ministry of Public Security in coordination with the Jaffna District Secretariat.

According to expenditure details, approximately Rs. 5.23 million was spent on stage and venue arrangements, while around Rs. 3.11 million was allocated for refreshments and catering. Transportation expenses, including payments to the Sri Lanka Transport Board to transport members of the public to and from the venue, amounted to approximately Rs. 2.34 million. Additional spending included Rs. 51,700 for banners and display materials.

Further costs comprised Rs. 23,375 for reception expenses, around Rs. 36,000 for water supply and sanitation facilities, approximately Rs. 118,000 for preliminary works and renovations, and about Rs. 154,000 under miscellaneous expenses.

During his visit to the Northern Province for Thai Pongal, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake also inaugurated a wind power project in Mannar and attended Pongal events in Velanai and at the Maruthadi Temple in Manipay. The total expenditure for the Jaffna event has drawn public attention due to the significant amount spent on a single programme.
