A discussion on potential investments by South Korean investors in the Northern Province was held this morning (Sept. 10) at the Governor’s Secretariat under the leadership of Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayagan.

The Governor said that South Korean investors have expressed interest in investing through local companies, with a focus on creating employment for youth and providing necessary vocational training through local training institutes. The meeting was aimed at exploring possible areas of investment and collaboration.

The Board of Investment (BOI) briefed participants on the progress of three investment zones being established in the North and highlighted available opportunities.

Representatives of the business community and exporters urged that all raw materials currently transported from the North to the South for value addition and export should instead be processed locally with foreign investment. They also suggested seeking investment for the development of the Kankesanthurai (KKS) Port, as well as reviving unused or abandoned factories and buildings for export-oriented ventures.

Exporters also raised challenges they face in the North, stressing the need for changes in the attitudes of certain officials to ensure smoother operations.

The meeting was attended by the Governor’s Secretary, Deputy Chief Secretary (Planning), officials, representatives of the business community, and exporter associations.
