For the first time in the history of the Sri Lanka Police, four female officers have been promoted simultaneously to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).

The National Police Commission (NPC) approved the promotions, which were later confirmed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya. The appointments officially took effect on January 1 this year.

The officers promoted are Darshika Kumari, Padmini Weerasuriya, Renuka Jayasundara, and Nishani Seneviratne. Notably, three of them joined the Sri Lanka Police Service in 1997 as trainee Sub-Inspectors.

  • Darshika Kumari currently serves as the Commanding Officer of the Police Field Force Headquarters, becoming the first female officer to hold this role.
  • Padmini Weerasuriya serves as the Acting DIG for the Kalutara District, making her the first woman in police history to oversee a district.
  • Renuka Jayasundara functions as the Acting DIG of the Bureau for the Investigation of Abuse of Children and Women.
  • Nishani Seneviratne, the senior-most among the four, is the Acting DIG of the Research and Information Technology Range and has served extensively with the State Intelligence Service.

This milestone marks a significant step toward greater female representation in Sri Lanka’s law enforcement leadership.
