Sri Lanka’s Justice Minister Visits Chemmani Mass Grave Site
Jaffna, June 19 – Sri Lanka’s Justice Minister, Harshana Nanayakkara, visited the Chemmani mass grave site in Jaffna on Thursday (19) to inspect the ongoing excavation process.
The minister, who was in the Northern Province to participate in a discussion held at the Kilinochchi District Secretariat, made the visit to Chemmani following the meeting. Representatives of the Office on Missing Persons (OMP) also accompanied him during the site inspection.
The visit comes at a time when the Chemmani mass grave has attracted significant attention from international human rights organizations. Excavations at the site have continued to uncover skeletal remains believed to belong to individuals of various ages, including children.
The discovery of an increasing number of human remains has intensified calls for accountability and further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the burials.
The Justice Minister’s visit is regarded as significant given the growing local and international focus on the findings emerging from the Chemmani excavation site.
