Three students of University of Jaffna have been summoned to appear before the Jaffna District Crimes Division for questioning in connection with a controversial incident that took place on Sri Lanka Independence Day.

According to reports, the students including the President of the University Students’ Union and the President of the Faculty of Arts Students’ Union, have been called to provide statements regarding the removal of the Sri Lankan national flag within the university premises and the hoisting of a black flag as a form of protest.

The incident occurred on February 4, when a group of students allegedly took down the national flag that had been raised on campus and replaced it with a black flag to express their dissent.

Police officers from the Jaffna District Crimes Division had previously visited the area near the university, collecting photographic and video evidence related to the incident. Statements were also recorded from university officials, including the Vice Chancellor and the Registrar.

A written notice requesting the students to appear for inquiry was reportedly sent by the police through the university registrar. While the letter was dated Monday, March 16, it was communicated to the students on Tuesday, March 17, according to student representatives.
