Trincomalee Tourist Assault: One Arrested, Another Suspect on the Run
In response to the recent assault on tourists in Trincomalee, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Hemachandra has confirmed that legal action is underway against the suspects involved.
One suspect has been arrested following the incident, while another remains at large, with police actively searching for him. Minister Hemachandra emphasized that the government is treating the case with utmost seriousness and is committed to ensuring the safety and dignity of all tourists visiting Sri Lanka.
The assault took place on the night of July 7 during a party at a tourist hotel in the Alleswatte area. Reports state that a foreign woman was subjected to inappropriate physical contact. When her husband intervened, he was attacked. A video capturing the assault quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing widespread attention.
Following the attack, the Uppuveli Police apprehended one suspect, who was brought before the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court on July 8 and remanded until July 21. The police continue their efforts to locate and arrest the second suspect, who is currently evading capture.
