A UK court has sentenced a man to 29 years in prison for the murder of his wife, a Sri Lankan Tamil woman, in a case that shocked the Tamil diaspora last year.

The Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday (Jan 16) handed down the sentence to 47-year-old Nimalaraja for the killing of his 44-year-old wife, Nilani, a mother of three. The murder took place in July 2025.

The court heard that the couple had been separated due to ongoing domestic disputes, and police had previously imposed restrictions preventing Nimalaraja from contacting his wife. The situation reportedly escalated after Nilani did not invite him to a family event, which prosecutors said triggered the attack.

According to evidence presented in court, Nimalaraja had purchased a knife from a shop, concealed it in a bag, and travelled by bus to the shop where Nilani was working. He then attacked her at her workplace. The couple’s 17-year-old daughter witnessed the incident.

Nimalaraja was arrested shortly after the attack and charged with murder. The prosecution successfully proved that the killing was premeditated and carried out with extreme violence.

In delivering the sentence, the judge stated that Nimalaraja should not be considered for early release after the minimum term, underscoring the seriousness of the crime.

The case has renewed calls within migrant communities for stronger awareness and intervention measures to prevent domestic violence.
