Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has expressed his willingness to testify in the case related to the disappearance of two human rights activists, Lalith Veeraraj and Kugan Murugananthan, who went missing in 2011.

His legal representatives informed the court yesterday (July 30) that he is prepared to provide testimony either in Colombo or Jaffna.

However, while indicating a preference to testify in Colombo, President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva, appearing on behalf of Rajapaksa, submitted a request to the High Court seeking permission for him to testify in Colombo.

The presiding judge, however, stated that such a request must be submitted directly to the Jaffna Court, which is currently handling the case.

The families of the disappeared had filed a case challenging the previous ruling by the Court of Appeal, which had annulled a 2019 Jaffna court order requiring Gotabaya Rajapaksa to appear in connection with the habeas corpus petition.
