
A suspect from Ariyalai, Jaffna, has been arrested for allegedly defrauding several individuals of millions of rupees by promising to send them abroad.
According to police, the suspect has four complaints filed against him in Jaffna and another four in Vavuniya. The Jaffna District Financial Crimes Investigation Unit carried out the investigation and arrested the suspect on Monday (13).
After questioning, he was produced before the Mallakam Magistrate’s Court, which ordered that he be remanded for 14 days.
Police said that despite repeated warnings, cases of fraud linked to foreign job scams continue to rise, particularly in the Northern Province, as many young men and women remain eager to migrate to Europe and Canada. Social activists have expressed concern over the growing number of victims losing large sums of money to such scams.
