A journalist has raised several questions regarding the police shooting that occurred yesterday morning in Allapity, Jaffna, following the release of an official statement by the Police Media Division.
According to the police statement, officers attempted to stop a vehicle, but the driver failed to comply. Police then fired warning shots into the air. As the vehicle reportedly continued without stopping, officers opened fire at the vehicle. During the incident, the 17-year-old boy who was driving the vehicle was struck by gunfire. He was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries, the statement said.
However, the journalist questioned the circumstances surrounding the shooting, suggesting that the statement may have been issued in haste.
The journalist further noted that, based on the visible condition of the vehicle, there appear to be indications that the shots were fired from behind. Observations also suggest the possibility that the shots were fired from a lower angle.
Further investigations are expected as more details emerge.
