The University of Jaffna administration has agreed to gradually commence development activities on the land allocated to the university in Mullaitivu District and to demarcate boundaries and erect a fence to prevent encroachment.
This decision was taken at a special discussion held this evening (Monday, 09.02.2026) at the Governor’s Secretariat under the leadership of Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayahan, in line with matters raised at the Mullaitivu District Coordinating Committee meeting.
At the District Coordinating Committee meeting held on 27.01.2026, concerns were raised that no development activities had been carried out for a long period on the land allocated to the University of Jaffna, leading to allegations of encroachment by individuals. The special discussion was convened under the Governor’s leadership to review the matter and find an immediate solution.
Speaking at the meeting, the Governor stated that during his tenure as Mullaitivu District Secretary, efforts had been made to establish a branch of a higher education institution in the district to promote educational development. He emphasized that establishing a university faculty in Mullaitivu is essential for the district’s progress.
During the discussion, it was also noted that the University of Vavuniya has already taken steps to establish its faculty in Mannar.
Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, Prof. Srisatkunarajah, stated that the university is ready to begin activities on the land allocated in Mullaitivu, but the delay was due to insufficient funding allocations.
As a solution, Mullaitivu District Secretary A. Umamaheswaran assured that a proposal would be submitted to allocate a portion of the special funds designated for Mullaitivu District for the initial phase of the university’s construction work.
The Vice-Chancellor further confirmed that the university administration will immediately carry out a survey of the 44-acre land and begin fencing work soon. Following the completion of the fencing, it was decided to proceed with construction activities in stages with financial support from the District Secretariat.
The meeting was attended by the Vice-Chancellor and Registrar of the University of Jaffna, representatives on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya, the Mullaitivu District Secretary, the Northern Province Land Commissioner, and other senior officials.
