Special Discussion Reviews Security and Future Plans for Jaffna and Vavuniya Prisons
A special emergency meeting was held on Wednesday (Aug 5) at the Northern Province Governor’s Secretariat to review the current conditions, security arrangements, and future plans for the Jaffna and Vavuniya prisons.
The meeting was convened at the request of Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara and was co-chaired by Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Minister I. Chandrasekar and Northern Province Governor N. Vethanayagan.
Speaking after the meeting, Minister Chandrasekar said prison authorities had assured officials that the Jaffna and Vavuniya prisons continue to operate peacefully and securely, unlike some prisons in southern Sri Lanka. While both facilities experience a degree of overcrowding, measures are already being implemented to address the issue.
He further noted that the prisons have introduced several rehabilitation and educational initiatives, including vocational training, continuing education, library facilities, and computer training, transforming them into institutions focused on rehabilitation rather than punishment.
In light of recent prison unrest reported elsewhere in the country, officials also discussed contingency measures to deal with any unforeseen situations in the Northern Province and strengthen the safety and security of inmates.
The meeting also resolved to submit a comprehensive report prepared by security officials to the Justice Minister, highlighting key issues such as staff shortages and other operational challenges, with recommendations for appropriate solutions.
The discussion was attended by the Northern Province Governor’s Secretary, senior police officials, the Commander of the 512 Brigade, Jaffna District Secretariat planning officials, the Jaffna Divisional Secretary, prison superintendents and officers, and other senior administrative representatives.
