Deputy Defence Minister Visits Palaly High Security Zone in Jaffna

Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Defence, , conducted an inspection visit yesterday (26 May 2026) to unreleased areas within the Palaly High Security Zone during his visit to the Jaffna District.

The Deputy Minister was accompanied by Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources and Chairman of the Jaffna District Coordinating Committee, , Member of Parliament , Commander of the Sri Lanka Army Lieutenant General , Jaffna District Secretary Maruthalingam Pratheepan, Commander of the Jaffna Security Forces Major General K.J.N.M.B.K. Navaratne, Additional Government Agent (Lands) P. Jeyakaran, Tellippalai Divisional Secretary Sivakanga Sudheesnar, Jaffna District Coordinating Committee Coordinator and Jaffna Municipal Council member S. Kapilan, and Jaffna District Coordinator of the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development S. Sirivageesan.

During the inspection, officials stated that 21,280 acres of land within the High Security Zone had already been released. The Government Agent requested the Deputy Minister to take steps to release lands located east of the Palaly Road as a first phase. In response, the Deputy Minister said the matter would be discussed at an upcoming National Security Council meeting.

The Government Agent also informed the Deputy Minister that compensation had still not been paid for lands acquired during the 1986 expansion of the Palaly Airport. The Deputy Minister stated that a separate discussion would soon be held in Colombo regarding the issue.

Meanwhile, Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar, MP Karunanathan Ilankumaran, and the Government Agent also urged the Deputy Minister to facilitate public access to places of worship located within the Palaly High Security Zone and to take steps to release lands belonging to Veluppillai Vidyalayam.
