NPP Using Corrupt Officials in North-East for Political Gain, Claims Gajendrakumar MP

Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) leader and Member of Parliament Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam has accused the National People’s Power (NPP) government of using corrupt officials in the North and East to advance its political agenda instead of taking legal action against them.
Speaking to the media during a public meeting held in the Thenmaradchi area last Friday, Ponnambalam alleged that although the NPP government had come to power promising to eliminate corruption and malpractice, several irregularities continue to take place under its administration.
He claimed that while certain individuals in the South had been arrested over corruption allegations, the government was deliberately avoiding action against corrupt officials in the North-East. According to him, this was because the NPP had failed to secure the level of public mandate it expected from Tamil-majority regions and was instead relying on certain officials to protect the interests of party affiliates in administrative matters.
Ponnambalam further stated that the NPP secured around 80,000 votes and won three parliamentary seats in the Jaffna electoral district during the last election. However, he argued that those votes largely came from sections of Tamil voters who traditionally support ruling parties, and that divisions among Tamil nationalist parties had allowed the NPP to gain those seats.
He also accused the government of threatening corrupt officials in the North-East with investigations in order to control administrative affairs and strengthen its political operations in the region.
Referring to the recent controversy surrounding teacher transfers in the Northern Province, Ponnambalam alleged that despite evidence of multiple irregularities emerging, the authorities were attempting to suppress the matter and carry out forced transfers with the support of corrupt officials.
He claimed that teachers who had already completed service in difficult areas and received transfers to preferred locations were once again being reassigned to distant districts.
The MP also alleged that the Election Commission had refused to issue the necessary letters to appoint replacement members to a local authority in Jaffna after female councillors from his party resigned from their positions. He stated that no court had issued any injunction preventing such appointments and accused corrupt officials of obstructing the process.
Ponnambalam further alleged that the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna’s “racist ideology” was the main reason behind attempts to prevent Tamil-majority local bodies in the North from functioning effectively.
He urged Tamil people to understand the difference between how matters are handled in the South and in the North-East, and claimed that the government’s intention was to retain corrupt officials under its control instead of bringing them before the law.
