DMK and AIADMK May Join Hands to Prevent Vijay Government, Reports Claim
Reports suggesting that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) are attempting to jointly form an alternative government to prevent actor-turned-politician Vijay from assuming power have triggered political shockwaves across Tamil Nadu.
According to emerging political reports, senior leaders from both parties are allegedly exploring the possibility of supporting Edappadi K. Palaniswami as Chief Minister with the backing of the DMK leadership. The development has sparked intense debate over how alliance parties and the public would react if such a political arrangement materializes.
Tamil Nadu politics has traditionally been dominated by a bipolar contest between the two major Dravidian parties — the DMK and AIADMK. However, Vijay’s entry into politics transformed the 2026 Assembly election into one of the most historic and unpredictable elections in the state’s recent history.
Although post-election surveys had initially predicted that Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and the DMK were likely to retain power, Vijay’s massive fan following and growing influence among young voters turned him into a decisive political force.
In a dramatic electoral shift, Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) reportedly secured 35 percent of the vote share and won 108 constituencies, pushing both the DMK and AIADMK to the sidelines.
Political observers have described the result as historic, noting that it marks the first time since 1967 that a third party outside the DMK-AIADMK political structure has emerged as the single largest force in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Vijay is also said to have surpassed the record previously set by legendary actor-politician M. G. Ramachandran for securing the highest vote share in a debut election.
Despite winning 108 seats, TVK has fallen short of the majority mark required to form a government independently, making support from smaller parties crucial.
In this context, the Indian National Congress, which reportedly secured five seats, has announced support for TVK and is also expected to align with Vijay’s party for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
With TVK and Congress together holding 112 seats, the alliance still requires six more seats to prove a majority in the Assembly.
Sources indicate that Vijay has written to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Left parties seeking support. Those parties are expected to hold consultations in the coming days regarding their next political move.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Tamil Nadu has yet to formally invite Vijay to form the government, adding further suspense to the rapidly evolving political situation.
