Father Lost at Sea, Daughter Rises as Jaffna District First

In an inspiring achievement at the 2025 GCE Advanced Level Examination, Devathas Kishani, a student of St. Anthony’s College Kayts, has created history by securing first place in the Jaffna District in the Bio-Technology stream, while also ranking 27th islandwide.

Her outstanding performance has brought immense pride to her school and the entire island region of Kayts in Jaffna.

Behind this remarkable success lies a deeply emotional story of hardship and perseverance. Kishani lost her father when she was just 10 months old, after he was reportedly shot dead while out at sea for fishing.

Since then, her mother, left widowed, raised her under extremely difficult circumstances by working as a daily wage labourer. Despite severe financial hardships and not even having a proper house where she could sit and study comfortably, Kishani refused to let poverty become a barrier to her education.

Her achievement stands as a powerful testament to the fact that with hard work, determination, and perseverance, success is possible in any circumstance.

This extraordinary victory is being widely hailed as a triumph not only for Kishani, but also for every struggling mother who sacrifices everything for her child’s future.
